He should have been working. He'd been sent there on an errand. Obi-Wan would be expecting him back, soon and for now, the Chancellor was expecting him sooner.
Still, he rationalised, it couldn't hurt to just peek in there, just a minute, could it? No one would notice... Surely they wouldn't. He'd only pop onto the balcony he knew gave the best view of one of the pods in the Senate chamber. Just a look. His errand wasn't that urgent.
So telling himself, young Anakin walked past the usual lift he took to get to the Chancellor's office, ducked down a different corridor, hoping no one noticed the young Jedi wandering about furtively. It didn't take him long to find the balcony he wanted, and he breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that no one else occupied it. Quickly, he settled down in one of the seats and looked out into the Senate chamber, not into the center where some endless debate was ongoing, but instead along the side and down a little. There! There she was!
Anakin couldn't stop himself from smiling at the mere sight of her and perhaps momentarily entertaining thoughts of going down there to meet her when the session was over, to see her again for the first time in eight years, since he met her as a child. He wasn't a child anymore, not really. Surely she'd see that? Wouldn't she? How could she not? He was almost a Knight in his own right by now, he knew Obi-Wan would have to recommend him for the trials soon and then....and then what? Jedi couldn't-...couldn't do anything. Not what he wanted to do, anyway. He should forget any foolish thoughts involving her but he wasn't able to. How could anyone be expected to forget something if they dreamed about it every. single. night? He'd just have to find a way. Somehow.
It was with thoughts like these that he distracted himself for a good thirty minutes staring down at her before he finally realised himself as well as the time and shook himself out of it. He'd have to run to get to the Chancellor's office now so he could leave the message before the session was over, Palpatine was supposed to have it by the time he returned to his office! He'd just have to come up with some excuse for Obi-Wan why he was later than he should have been, especially since he should be almost back at the Temple by now!
And as the youth ran out of the balcony, he didn't notice that while he was staring at her someone else, someone standing at the exact center of the Senate, was staring at him with a speculative smile.
